Arabia planter

I found this planter at an estate sale, and it was the only thing there that I brought home, but I felt like it was a real score. I paid a dollar for the pair, and with it being in perfect shape, I couldn't have been happier. I had seen this type of planter in a couple of blog post on other blogs, but figured it wouldn't be something I would run into. It's a beautiful matte black, and the simplicity of the pot really lets the attention be on the plant. I have a hard time finding planters that I can live with and usually just pot stuff in plain terracotta pots. I do have a bullet planter that I refuse to plant in, being afraid it was deteriorate the fiberglass.

The Arabia planter was designed by Richard Lindh and made in Finland.

Does anyone else have a hard time finding nice pots to plant in ? Has anyone found a good source for nice simple, modern pots ?

  1. Yes! Nice planters and rugs are the two things I never seem to come across in St. Louis. I've yet to find a single example of either.

    1. I'm sorry about your rug search! I did see your post about the planters Ikea has, and we are planning a trip next month, so If there is a planter there you have your heart set on I could try to pick one up for you. It seems like I haven't been much help with your rug though. But, because of the email I sent Tandy Leather they have made me an Elite member... Which I was told that's whole sale prices.

    2. Wow! That's pretty cool. Looks like you've got a ticket to cowhide city. I hate to ask, but would you mind if I were to place an order through you sometime in the near future?

  2. Hey Hannah,

I'm a potter. I'm working on my MFA in ceramics at SIUE, and I've got some "mod" simple pots in the kiln right now - essentially cylinders plain and simple. I have some plans to slip cast some clean forms soon and if that materializes I'll let you know. I'll also send you a link to the pots in the kiln once they are photo'd.

ps, I'm also a fan of the west german pottery you collect.

    1. Hey Phil, its wonderful to hear your a potter. I would love to see any of your work! I also would be interested to hear if there is any vintage pottery you covet? There is so much out there its hard to know where to start, it seems with the west German pottery its easy to pick out and i love the texture of the lava glazes. Let me know when you have epics of the planters in the kiln. Thanks!

  3. Yeah, as far as manufactured pottery goes my only favorites are the Homer Laughlin diner ware and some of the Japanese porcelain potteries of the 60's and 70's. All of my clay friends think its odd that all the coffee mugs I display and use regularly are vintage diner ware.

You can check out my less than ideal website that has some semi-recent work. I'll let you know as I update and get more current:
