Your thoughts please...

I know the upholstery choice is awful, and it is not original. But, if you look past that, aren't the bones beautiful? This sofa at one point was webbed, and most likely when the webbing started to go they replaced it with plywood. I was not able to find any sort of makers mark on this, but I believe it is designer. I love the way the top of the backrest, widens and curves slightly in.
I'm torn.
Does anyone know anything more about this sofa? Can you see past the awful fabric? Or am I just looking too hard, and this is nothing more than thrift junk?

  1. It does look very Hans Wegner or Grete Jalk. Don't think either of those are it, however. Definitely a Scandinavian Modern aesthetic. Reupholstered this would be a phenomenal sofa!

  2. I was thinking the same thing, even a little Finn Juhl, Has Olson. I'm not sure if its worth the work, or if it wouls sell on ebay with the current upholstery.

  3. I don't know what kind, but the wood is beautiful. I think with a more appropriate upholstery choice, it would be a wonderful piece.

  4. I think the wood may be just a nicely worn oak? or ash?

  5. I think it's very cool. Are you thinking of reupholstering, or trying to resell it? I have heard that getting things upholstered can be expensive, but perhaps it's a DIY for you?

  6. looks like oak to me, but personally...I just don't see much in it...I'd move on

  7. I think you should run your hand across the back, there should be spindles/ dowels under the upholstery, if they have been removed, then I would forget the sofa. If the sofa still has it's spindles/ dowels then it is still going to need to be reupholstered; eBay shows these sofas running the gammut of sold prices from $300- $1300. It has "potential" but also a lot of potential costs.

  8. I'm just glad that you found this and it's vexing YOU and not ME! My opinion, I don't like the Oak and there is something about the shape of the arms that I don't like. It's just not delicate enough. It's bordering on Early American or something. I'm not too put off by the upholstery or the upholstery job. I'd keep it.

If I bought this and I had a lot of time to kill, I'd re-shape the arms and paint the wood Satin Black (or ebonize it).

It is very unusual. So did you pick it up?

  9. If it didn't end up being a pain to reupholster then I would definitely buy it, paint it and redo the fabric. I think the bones are beautiful. :)

  10. I can't pass up a Danish Modern-esque sofa to save my life so I'd scoop it up. Yes the upholstery is hideous but I look past that. You should see some of the crap I've picked up and restored. So are you getting it?!

  12. totally reminds me of Juhl. I'd keep the danish wood frame color as-is and reupholster in a navy texture, something that feels a linen-y or has a little slub to it.
